"I call to the ancestors who lived and died before I took breath, to all the mothers and fathers who created life...who created me.
Walk with me tonight.
I honour those who have passed over; those whom I have known and loved in this life.
Ancestors and helping spirits, we invoke you, In this sacred space, we honour and pursue.
Guide us with wisdom, protect us on this quest,
With gratitude, we gather, feeling truly blessed".
Samhain sits at the threshold between seasons the end of the harvest and the beginning of the darker half of the year.
It has long been associated with honouring the dead and recognising the connection between the living and those who have gone before.
Traditionally, it’s been seen as a time when the veil between worlds is thinner making it a natural point to connect to our ancestors and those who have passed..
Create an altar for your ancestors and passed over loved ones.
You can begin on the Full Moon (Saturday) or even the eve of the Full Moon (Friday).
Create a simple altar with a candle, a few meaningful objects, photos, or anything that represents or reminds you of those who have passed.
It is traditional to place food on the alter too. Place the favourite food or drink of those who have passed.
Apples and pomegranates, can be offered too,
Let it come together gradually over a few days.
From the Full Moon through to Samhain, let this alter becomes a quiet point of connection within the home.
The candle can be lit whenever you are home, like a gentle vigil. A simple way of acknowledging presence, memory, and continuity.
For the Ritual
Prepare a tea.
Mugwort is perfect to work with at this time.
When you are ready to sit at the altar, begin by preparing a cup of mugwort tea.
Steep 1–2 teaspoons of dried mugwort in hot water for around 10 minutes, then allow it to cool slightly.
Mugwort has traditionally been used to support dreaming, intuition, and connection to the subconscious making it a fitting plant to work with at this time.
Sit with the altar and light the candle.
Allow a few moments to arrive, letting the body settle and the breath slow.
Hold the mugwort tea in both hands and pause before drinking.
Gently acknowledge those who came before, the lineage that continues and open yourself to whatever may be ready to be felt or seen
Take a few slow, intentional sips.
When you feel ready say these words;
“Ancestors and loved ones those known and unknown, you are welcome here, in love and in truth.”
Sit quietly for as long as you feel to.
Meditate with the candle, or with eyes closed.
Perhaps let you gaze be on a picture.
There is nothing to force or seek.
Connection may come through thoughts, memories, sensations, or emotions. It may also come later in dreams or in subtle ways.
All of this is part of the practice.
When you feel complete.,
Make a small offering by pouring a small amount of the mugwort tea into into a bowl on the alter.
A simple act of reciprocity and acknowledgement.
Bring awareness back to your body.
Take a breath and allow the experience to settle without needing to analyse it.
A quiet thank you is enough but you could also say;
"I ask to be surrounded with divine white light, and with the highest, best, most loving guides and ancestors who can serve me now. Please connect with me through my dreams tonight, and bring me healing, guidance, and insight. Help me to remember my dreams upon waking, and to understand the love you bring. I ask this for the highest good of all.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you and so it is."
The candle can be extinguished, or left to continue its vigil if appropriate.
You can repeat this ritual every evening for the 4/5 days from the full moon to Samhain.
The altar can remain in place until after Samhain has passed.
There is no need to rush to take it down.
Allow the connection to close gradually, in its own time.
This practice is not about reaching for something outside of yourself.
It is about recognising the continuity between past and present and creating space to acknowledge it.
Shared with love and kindness and for the highest good of all beings.
Many Blessings
Sam
